La Estrella Hike

03/18/2019

This was my third hike with Sandra and my fourth around Medellin, and once again, we failed to find the intended path. Sandra got instructions from a colleague a couple of months ago, but could no longer decipher her cryptic notes, to the point that we started at the wrong…Read More

Borrowing Sam

03/16/2019

While we searched for a place of our own, Sandra spent a few weeks staying in one of the school’s homestays with the lovely Dońa Marta and her dog Sam. Sandra developed a bond with both, and we often return to take Sam out for a walk around the canal.…Read More

Moving In

03/06/2019

With both of us still essentially living out of suitcases, we didn’t want to rush into buying furniture, so we decided to look for a furnished apartment to begin with, preferably somewhere close to Sandra’s school. After a few false starts, we finally found a place overlooking the velodrome on…Read More

Rock Climbing

02/09/2019

The second surprise Sandra had prepared for me when I returned was to go climbing together. This bouldering gym is near Laureles, where she teaches, so it will be convenient when we move. From her clues, ‘bring socks, but not shoes’, and ‘it’s a physical activity’, I had thought we…Read More

The Return

02/02/2019

After two months in Australia, I made it back to Colombia at the beginning of February. To celebrate, Sandra took me out to an Indian restaurant, which are not easy to find in Medellin. To be honest, I can’t even remember the food because I was so happy to be…Read More

Christmas Lights

12/04/2018

Every year, Medellin puts on a display of lights in the lead up to Christmas. This year, the theme was flora and fauna, for which Colombia is famous. It is number one or two in the world in terms of diversity for amphibians, birds, butterflies and orchids and represents more…Read More

Living with Mao

10/29/2018

Sandra’s flatmate, Felix, was kind enough to let me move in so we could spend time living together closely. He was in the middle of writing up his PhD thesis and preferred the peace of the countryside so the rent I paid allowed him to do that, which made for…Read More

Meeting Sandra’s Family

10/13/2018

Sandra’s mother and her brother live in the same gated apartment complex in Bogota, and we spent a weekend with them around the time we all celebrated birthdays. Her mother shares her life with Ricardo, and her brother with another Sandra. My Sandra loves them both enormously, and it was…Read More

El Cielo

10/06/2018

I’d racked my brains for something to get Sandra for her birthday. She’s always so creative with her gifts, and I wanted to show how much she meant to me. In the end, I fell back on the gringo strategy of spending money. Our friends had been to a Hestonesque…Read More

Book Festival

09/15/2018

If I am to stay in Colombia, I need to find something to keep me busy. I was lucky to find the Experimental Technologies group at the libraries, who welcomed me with open arms. My Spanish isn’t really up to the task, and I’m learning more than I’m teaching at…Read More
